Columbia, Challenger, Discovery, Atlantis and Endeavour (and Enterprise and Pathfinder); they were and are "America's Space Shuttle[s]". But they were also a global phenomenon; they formed the backdrop to an entire era of spaceflight globally as they regularly (although not as regularly as planned) orbited our blue and green marble.
In many ways, the shuttle was the prime symbol of 1980s American technology, a cutting edge craft engineered at incredible expense to overcome the cold hard boundaries of physics. It was a miracle of engineering, the heir to the Apollo program. It was a design so frighteningly capable that it was carefully copied by the USSR at great expense.
Sadly it was also a contradiction of staggering proportions; a stunning success and a tragic failure all at once. An experimental vehicle inappropriately deemed operational; the first reusable space vehicle yet not totally reusable; the most prolific American space transport and sadly the most deadly. It met and exceeded expectations of capability, range and flexibility but ultimately failed to meet core parts of the mission it was originally designed for.
It was an amazing program, built around a flawed but amazing vehicle.
The Shuttle is the symbol of an era, and it remains one of the most iconic, complex and magical machines ever built.

Believe it or not I was 90% of the way through creating STS // INFINITY when my mate recommended a listen to PSB's "The Space Race". Incredible work. Orange Mono
